This course has taught me many different leadership styles and theories, but there are a few that I would like to incorporate in my own leadership style. The first one is Path-goal theory, it emphasizes the relationship between the leader’s style and the characteristics of the followers and the organizational setting. There are four major components of leadership behavior that makes up the path-goal theory. The first one is Directive; this is an approach where the leader sets clear standards of performance and makes the rules and regulations clear to the followers. The second component is Supportive, the leader will act in a friendly manner and approachable. They will go out of their way to make sure that the well-being and needs of their followers are being met. The third component is Participative, the leader will include followers in discussions and obtain ideas from them to implement in their decision. The last one is achievement oriented, the leader will show a high degree of confidence and will seek continuous improvement from their followers. The leader will challenge the followers to perform at a high level.

I would like to first get to know my peers before I choose which leadership behavior approach I am going to use on them, so I would know which one will fit their needs better. Each approach is appropriate for certain situation, a directive style of leadership approach is best in situations which followers do not understand the task and the rules are unclear. A directive approach will address confusions and will point the followers in the direction where the leader wants them to be. In situations where the task is unsatisfying is frustrating the followers, a supportive style of leadership is appropriate for this situation because it nurtures and eases the frustration. A participative approach would be appropriate in a situation where the task can be interpreted in different ways. This will allow them to respond favorably in decision making. I would incorporate the achievement-oriented behavior approach by motivating and challenging the followers to do better and that their efforts will result in effective performance.

I would integrate all of my leadership style based on the situation that I am in. For each person I will use a different approach and try to see which style works and which does not. I will take notes and document my interactions with my followers so that I will know which one is more effective and which is not. I will treat all of my followers with respect and make myself approachable. As a leader I will try and be more directive when I need to and opposite if I don’t have too.
